Circle Sandbox to Move From Ropsten to Goerli Ethereum Testnet

In a continuous effort to enhance stability and reliability for developers building on Circle infrastructure, today we are excited to announce our plans for moving to the Goerli Ethereum Testnet.

Goerli uses a proof of authority consensus method, driving more stability than proof of work models, which can be prone to reorgs that cause test environment disruptions. We are confident that this change will minimize outages and provide a more seamless testing experience.

What exactly is changing?

Expect the following to occur post-migration:

  • ETH Ropsten on-chain history will be outdated, but will not be deleted.
  • Circle wallet balances will remain the same
  • Deposit addresses created on Ethereum within will be cleared, meaning all previous deposit addresses will cease to exist. Sending new USDC to cleared addresses will result in lost USDC within sandbox Any historical transfers will still exist
  • The Testnet USDC contract will have a new address.

We will follow up ahead of the migration timeline with all the detailed steps needed to get back up and running on Goerli testnet.

When will this change occur?

We will be migrating to the Goerli testnet from 8:00am ET on September 21, 2021 through 10pm ET on September 23, 2021. During this time, the Ethereum network will not be available within Sandbox for testing.

How does this impact my current integration on Sandbox with Ropsten?

Your current integration with Ropsten will no longer be supported after September 21st, 2021. If you intend to continue testing, you will need to do so on the Goerli testnet on September 23rd, 2021..
